MAN FOUND DROWNED.
BODY FLOATING IN HARBOUR
DISCOVERY OFF DEVONPORT.
The body of a man, identified as Mr. Joseph Alexander Duncan, of Hamilton, was found floating in the harbour near Duder's Wharf, Devonport, at about 1 p.m. yesterday. Mr. Duncan, who was about 35 years of age, was a married man, with five children. He resided at Macfarlane Street, Hamilton, and was employed as a labourer by the local Borough Council. Ho had been missing since November 1.
It is thought Mr. Duncan was drowned at 2.50 a.m. on November 2, as at that time the Ferry Company's watchman at Devonport heard cries of distress in the harbour near the wharf. A thorough search was made without success. Later there was found in the waiting room a cap with a Frankton outfitter's name in it. When the body was recovered it was found that deceased's watch had stopped at 2.30.
This is the second drowning accident in the same locality within a few days, and rescue work on both occasions was delayed owing to the difficulty of obtaining a boat. Tho Devonport police are endeavouring to have an emergency boat placed in a suitablo position at Devonport in readiness to be lowered in emergency.
