THE AUCKLAND NOMINEE.
MR. JOHN ANGUS DUNNING.

The Rhodes Scholarship Committee of Selection met this morning at Government House, those present being the Governor-General, Lord Jellicoe, presiding, Sir Robert Stout, Chief Justice, Professor J. Macmillan Brown, Chancelbr of the University of New Zealand, Piofessor Rankine Brown, vice-chancellor, Frofessoi Segar, chairman of the Board o' Studies, Dr. Allan Thomson and Mr. C. M. Gilray, both ex-Rhodes scholars, and Mr. E. T. Norris, registrar of the University of New Zealand. The candidate selected was Mr. John Angus Punning, of the Auckland University Ollege.
Mr. Dunning, who was also nominated as the Auckland candidate last year, is at present on the sta/f of the John McGlashan College, Danedin. He is 21 years of age and has had a brilliant career both as regards scholastic and athletic achievement st the Auckland Grammar School, the Auckland University College and in Dunedin. He entered the Grammar School from the Ti Point school with a junior scholarship, and two years later gained a senior scholarship. In 1919 he won a junior nniversitv scholarship and the Gillies scholarship. He graduated B.Sc. at Auckland University College at the end of 1922, his advanced subjects being chemistry and mathematics. In 1923 he was appointed to the staff of the John McGlashan College. He followed his studies at Otatro University, where he is still sitting this year for honours in science. He was recently appointed assistant lecturer in mathematics at Otago University. Mr. Dunning has an imposing record in athletic fields, his principal sports being cricket, hockey and tennis. While at school he played for the Grammar first eleven, and later won a place in the University senior team. During his two years' senior cricket in Auckland he gained a reputation both as batsman and bowler. Since he has been in Dunedin he has played for Carisbrook, and at the opening match this season took seven wickets for 53 runs. He is an Otago cricket representative, being included in the last Plunket Shield Otago team. Last season he participated in a record stand by the Carisbrook Club, when 517 runs were scored for three wickets, Mr. Dunning's total being 117. He also renresented. Otago at hockey this winter. When in Auckland he captained the college second eleven and has since played for Otago University senior team in Dunedin. At tennis, ho has promise of developing into a first-class player. During his career at Auckland University College, Mr. Dunning was extremely popular. He was interested in practically every college society that was open to him, and held executive positions in many cases. In 1922, ho was secretary of the Students' Association. On account of his scholastic and athletic abilities, together with his general character and personality, he should approach the description laid down by Cecil Rhodes for the ideal Rhodes scholar.
The other candidates nominated for the scholarship this year were Messrs. J. 0. J. Malfrov, LL.B., Victoria College, Wellington; E. S. Craven, M.A., Canterbury University College; and W. J. Scott, University of Otago.
