He waa always one of the leaders and he finished on well. There was a close finish and many people thought Tiff won, though the judge said he was only .ii. , d . J llß , ncier hunted him along over, the last half mile and with the others oarying their weights. I think he would have won easily. It was Quite a satisfactory cup trial, as he is a true stayer. Unfortuna.ely he was lame after the race, and ho may have to be spelled. Taboo,_ the winner of tho Trial Stakes at Wingatui, is a three-year-old colt by Solfenno from Ruenalf'a Daughter, an Aus-tralian-bred mare. Taboo showed a good burst of speed and can be marked off as certain 'to win more races. . Boadicea was responsible for a fine race in the Mosgiel Handicap on Thursday. She was in front most of the way, and only iust tailed over the list hundred yards. As' a result she was heavily supported to-day Jor the Ranfurly Handicap of one mile. The going, should have been just right, but she was in hopeless trouble a -long way from home. Ravenna won the Electric Handicap' at mngatui on Thursday, in ridiculously easy fashion. To-day in the Shorts Handicap she looked a sure winner when she took Moorland s_ measure a hundred yards from the pout, out Gray swooped down with The Harp and just won on the post. Clever horsemanship was responsible for the result. Mantua made her first appearance for the season this week. She tailed off badly in the Electric Handicap on Thursday, and put in an electrio run in the straight, missing second place by a head. To-day in the RanfurJy Handicap she was again last to th« straight but her finishing run landed he>a decisive winner. She is in nicc order and she will have to be mentioned with bis races at Biccarton next month. If Count Cavour had not started in thn Electric Handicap on Thursday he would have been favourite for the Dunedin Guineas. He went so very badly in the six furlong race that he was allowed to pay a bisr price in the Guineas. The mils gave him plenty of time, and after Lava and Footfall had led him to the straight Count Cavour ran past and won as ho liked. It wa* an impressive performance* and he now looks quite a good three-year-old, who may stay out the Derby course. He has earned 7lb penalty for the New Zealand Cup. and his owners present intention is to start him. Winkie's Best won his race at Wingatui on Thursday like a good horse.. The field represented only fait class but he cleaned the Opposition up in short order. Later in the season he will be winning in. good open company. Full Swing followed up her second at Wingatui on- Thursday by winning to-day in fine style. She was condemned after her Ashburton and Geraldine fajlures, but obviously that form was not tight. She is a four-year-old by Nassau from the Martian macs. Maraa, and she is a useful sort.

.Albert Goodman sold Rene Mavis to a South Canterbury sportsman after her double win at Kurow. She failed each day at Wingatui, and jiow she does not look a good proposition especially as she is unsound. * Printemps put up two good performances at Wingatui this week. He won the October Welter Handicap on the first day very decisively and to-day he beat everything but Mantua in the Ranfarly Handicap. Printemps seems to ba at bis best when the ground is soft. He is in fine fettle juat'now. Baldowa is not ready yet, and junder the circumstances he performed well at Wingatui. When he is right he can be marked for winning a big race. Lava set out to win the Duaedin Guineas from end to end. She carried out her task all right till a furlong from home, and then only Count Cavonr could» beat her. Lava is a very smart filly, who should win good races up to seven furlongs. Footfall went well in the Dunedin Guineas for most of the way. but he was st-op-§ing a bit at the last. His stable mate tarmist collapsed after going about half s. mile, and she is not nearly at her best. Carpentier ran a couple of good races at the Dunedin meeting and he should soon be a winner again. Top Score ran a fair race on the opening day at "Wingatui, but failed to run on. She was improved by the race and she battled out the' mile well beating Guncase comfortably, while the others w«oe a long way back. A mile seems to suit Top Score, though she may stay a bit further. All Style, the winner of the concluding event at "Wingatui, is a three-year-old filly by Gay Lao! from Arch Lassie. She appeared on the scene late and her great finishing run _was rewarded in the last couple of strides; it was auito a taking performance.
