[Br TELEGRAPH. —PBESS ASSOCIATION.] GISBOKNE, Saturday. Hawke's Bay played Poverty Bay before ft record attendance of between 2000 and 3000 people. Poverty Bay's good smothering tactics had a great effect upon tho visitorcr speedy backs whose spectacular passing was seen on but few occasions. Poverty Bay led in the first spell by 11 points to G and retained an advantage until within the last quarter of an hour. [BX TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] DUNEDIN. Saturday. Wellington defeated Otago at Carisbrook to-day in a game that provided a bright and open exposition of Rugby. From the kickoff there was nothing between the teams, and the issue was in doubt until toward the end. Where the Wellington team might be said to be superior was in initiative and in quickness in making oponings from the mistakes of the other side. The Otago team Vvas tho best soen in aotion this yoar, and tout for the fact that at least one_ try and a frco kick woro presented to Wellington in thV second half, tho combination might easily have been the winners. The homo ba<*ka wero considerably strengthened by the inofaaion of Townscnd and Dickinson as five-oighths. These-two played well together both in attack and in defence. . The small Wellington half. Warbrick, was one of* the best backs of his sido. and got the ba'.U away smartly from the oorums. Ho was always prominent in tackling. The fiveeighths, Gibson and Johnson, handled the ball well, hut both were inclined to attempt too much on their own. Walters, the fullback, was a thorn in the Bide of the Otngo attack, savVng his side repeatedly. Tho Otago forward pack was up against a heavier Bid 6* but they prevailed m tho loose time after time. Thios were scored by Prico and McDermot for tho winners. Smith scored for tho losers. District High School. 13. beat Third Grade rops.. 3. TE AROHA. Hamilton thirds defeated Piako thirds bill points to 3.

THE MANUKAU CLUB. Tho Maaukau Rovers Club, which recontly joined the Rugby ranks, is making excellent progress, and that it has good material in its membership was shown by the club team's display 'against Ring's Old IBoys second grade fifteen at Onehunga on Saturday, the local side winning by 8 points to 6.
