The first representative Rugby football match for Bomo years, between Northern Wairoa and Auckland, was played here today, in good weather, and on a dry e» an <* which was a bit bumpy. The Auckland players often misjudged tho bounce and over-ran in dribbUner. When the teams-lined out. it was seen that Auckland, although much younger, were just as heiavy as their opponents. Auokland got going ciuickly when play was resumed and strenuously attempted to get over, some fine passing, in which the whole or tho backs took part, being continued until Simonsen put tho ball out at halfway. From the line-out the Wairoa forwards took the ball to near tho Auckland lino whore Gould had a shot at goal from a free kick, but missed. Nosthern Wairoo, 3; Auckland. 0. A dash by McGregor was stopped by Wade-. A missed kiok by Hopkins saw trouble for Auokland. who had to struggle hard to keep Wairoa out. Batchelor took the ball with a fine dribble well down to Wairoa's territory. Simonsen put in a timely kick. The hell went for half-time with Auckland on the attack and the scores still Northern Wairoa. 3 points; Auckland. 0. Wairoa kicked high and several times the rays of the sun and the bounce of the ball beat tho Auckland backs, allowing Wairoa to almost get over. Auckland hung on tenaciously, but Wairoa kept hammering away until from a scrum the ball was passed to Gould, who sent on to Brydon, the latter transferring to Harding, who raced round behind the posts. Ho converted with a nice kick. Northern Wairoa. 8; Auokland, 0. Tho kick but was smothered by Rika and play returned to tho Auckland lino, whoro Batchelor relieved the pressure by a timely kiok. Further pressuro was relioved by it mark by McGresor. Tho Auckland backs were still passing well and making every endeavour to break tho defence but, to no purpose. _ Gould was temporarily hurt. Wairoa continued to attack and in a pretty passing bout between Gould, Brydon. Harding and Simonson, tho last-named dashed over. Harding kicked an easy goal. Northern Wairoa, 13; Auckland, 0. Auckland were not done yet. From the kick out they rushed to Wairoa'a territory, where the ball hung for some time. Batohelor had a shot from a mark, but tho ball went wide. Auokland returned well and again endeavoured to score, but the defenco held good. Marlborough wore the first to score, O'Brien, who had previously almoat kickeu a penalty, sending the ball over the bar. Hawkins (Wellington) broko away with dashing play and scored. Malcolm's kick against tho wind failed. Marlborough came again, and poor defence work by Wellington nearly let the visitors in, what appeared a clear try. being disallowed. The third Sedclon Shield match was played at Motuoka to-day, and resulted in Golden Bay—-Motucka (holders), defeating Nolson (challengers), by 14 points to 12. In the nrst half Morris and Grigg secured a try each for the winners, and Bowers converted one. KinKott scored for Nelson and Snodgrass kicked a penalty goal. In tho second spoil boll and Cmgg each scored for the winners and Wallace and Challiea for Nolson. The weather was excellent, thero was a large crowd and the game was the fastest and hardest of the' Seddon Shield matches.
