WOMEN PLAY MM.

EVEN MATCHES RESULT*

MEN AVENGE PREVIOUS DEFEAT.

LADIES SCORE BRILLIANTLY.

The annual fixture between women and men was played at Middlemore during the week-end, the result being a win for the men, who thus avenged the very severe defeat inflicted on them at Heretaunga last year. The men's team was a very strong one, but a number of the women players were unable to make the trip to Auckland, and their team was sligntly weaker than it might'have been, though all the players were prominent in golf tournaments last year. Foursomes and singles were played. In the foursomes each side played on handicap, the women's handicaps' being decided on thenpar and the men's on bogey. The women played from their own tees but went down so badly that in the singles, which followed, they were allowed the difference in handicap, plus two strokes. Middlemore course favours the women players very considerably from the tees compared with Heretaunga, whore they won so last year playing on the difference in handicap plus five strokes. "The No. 1 match with foursomes was between Miss Eva Browh (Napier) and Mrs. Slack (Thames) and L. Quin (Eltham) and J. Goss (Wanganui). The men won by three up and two to play after giving away two strokes. The fact that Miss Brown and Mrs. Slack scored very well is indicated by the fact that the men were out in 39 and home in one over fours, finishing in 76. A Sensational Finish. T. H. Horton {Masterton) and R. D. Wright (Auckland), giving away five strokes, beat Miss Payton (Auckland) and Mrs. Blythe (Hamilton), 5 and' 4. The women played good golf but the men were out in level fours and finished in 74, which is excellent scoring. Miss Acheson (Nelson) and' Miss Snodgrass (Rotorua) had their match with H. B. Lusk (Auckland), and R M. George (Maungakiekie) finished in sensational scoring. The men went out in 39, and finished the match with 2. 4, 4, 2 on the way home against bogey, 3, 4, 5, 3. The men were conceding five strokes. H. W. Macfarlane and 0. A. Seymour (Christchurch) went out in 39 and finished the round in 77, beating Miss Jervis and Mrs. Wagg (Hutt), 6 and 5, after conceding five strokes. ' : There was a good match between Misses Bell (Wellington) and Cooper, who received five strokes from A. D. S. Duncan (Wellington) and W. B. Colbeck (Auckland), and were beaten on the sixteenth green, 3 and 2. In the afternoon the singles produced Rome very fine matches,, most of• the ladies playing up well and the handicapping proving more even. Several fine scores were made. Amateur Champion Defeated. Miss Brown beat L. Quirt 4 and 3. She was two up in the first four holes, though Quin had won the firsts Quin reduced this to all square and was one up; going to the ninth, which both played in ! perfect, bogies. Miss Brown had a stroke, j however, and won the hole. They turned ' for home all square, and Miss Brown bunkered her tee shot, losing the tenth, j but she won the next in a beautiful four, not requiring her stroke there. She then won the next three in 5, 3, 4, 5, having a stroke at the last-mentioned hole, the fifteenth. This ended the match. The players completed the round, Miss Brown doing 43 out and 41 in, finishing in 84. She received four stroke-5, and used three of them. Quin \vas playing fairly good, golf but the run at the end was too good for him. Miss Brown will defend the New Zealand; ladies' title, which she now holds, at. Hamilton this week. She is playing a great tee shot "and good seconds. J. Goss and Mrs. Slack went to the last green to decide their match. At the sixteenth Mrs. Slack lost a chance to. become dormy by missing a 4ft. putt She lost the last two holes, Goss winning on the last green after conceding three ! strokes. Miss Payton also did an 84 against Horton, who went out in level fours, but had little advantage at the turn. A couple of loose holes at the end of the round and the fact that he took fours at all the short holes prevented him breaking 70. He played perfect golf otherwise than on the greens, and finished in 74. Ladies' Most Brilliant Hound. B. D. Wright ran into the severity of an eighty-one produced by Mrs. Blythe. Mrs. Blythe played' great golf and won 3 and 1. Miss Acheson accounted for H, B. Lusk on the run home. She did the last half in three over fours—excellent golf, which gave her a win of 3 and 2. i • ': ; The most brilliant round of the ladies was that done by Miss Snodgrass against R. M. George. Unfortunately the latter did not finish out with his opponent but she wanted, two fours for an eighty, and was plaving well enough to get them. Miss Snodgrass went out in five over fours, and took 30 for the seven holes coming home. She was dormy four and won 3 and 2. Macfarlane won from Miss Jervis, 3 and 2, and Seymour won from Mrs. Wagg, 4 and 2, after two interesting matches Miss Bell beat A. D. S. Duncan, 4 and 2. after playing good golf. She received nine strokes. Miss Cooper went down by one to E. C. Kirk, the match finishing on the last green., ' The results were:—Foursomes. —Men, 5 wins. Singles: Men, 5 wins; women, 5 wins.
