FARMERS' ENGINES.

CERTIFICATES ESSENTIAL,

ONUS UPON THE OWNERS.

[BX TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

HAMILTON. Friday.

The obligation is cast by Statute upon all owners of steam and oil engines to secure from the inspector of machinery a certificate each year showing that tho engine is safe to run. This fact was made clear in the Hamilton Court to-day when a farmer, J. H. Simons," was charged with running his engine without a certificate, and was fined £3 and costs.

The inspector of machinery, Mr. A. C. Reidj who prosecuted, said many engines were at present in use without the necessary annual certificate having been obtained. The department intended to put a stop to the practice.
