GIVEN A START.

FOUR STOWAWAYS CHARGED. " ACQUISITION TO COUNTRY." " They are young -and strong and probably an accjuisition to the country," said Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., at the Police Court yesterday when, ordering four stowaways, Thomas Hudson, aged 22, William i?orber, aged 23, James Alexander Kelly, aged 27, and Ma.urcisa O'Neill, aged 24, to come up for sentence within 12 months if called upon. The men secreted themselves on board the steamer Maimoa and Avere discovered when the vessel was.two days out from Liverpool, en route for Auckland. Senior-Sergeant Rawle said the men had worked and behaved well after being found, and they had been given good characters by the captain. They said they had been unable to get woi'k in England, having been unemployed from three to >ten months. Kelly was a confectioner and the other three were labourers. Captain Davies, of the Salvation Army, said he would try to find employment for the men, and the magistrate accordingly stated that provided they behaved the matter would be dropped. Captain J. H. Gaskell, of the Maimoa, remarked that on a previous voyage a stowaway was convicted and discharged. Now four men were being allowed to go unpunished. There seemed to be no limit and probably next time the vessel arrived she would have a dozen* stowaways. Senior-Sergeant Rawle: They should put a reliable quartermaster, in charge of the gangway. Mi-. Poynton: It is only human nature; put yourself in their place, captain. They could see prospects out here and naturally they were anxious to get work. They worked well on the ship, and I must say they look men of the right type, and I do not want to punish them; I want to give them a start.
