(Received 10.S p.m.) B un . LONDON. July 27. The Royal Aero Club has awarded ih« Britannia trophy to Mr. A- J. Cobham for the most meritorious performance in the air in 1923.
air. Cobham flew 12,000 miles from London to the Near East, Palestine, North. Africa, Spain* and back to London >'ithout accident.
Mr. Alan J. Cobham is the chief pilot of the De Haviliand Aircraft Company, Britain. Ho has made many remarkable flights during his career as an airman. F He successfully completed the tour referred to in the cable messages on May 1, 1923, having set out on his journey from London on February 25. The flight was undertake:.! with the idea of proving the practicability of civil aviation,. Mr, Cobfcam accomplished the journey over three continents in varying conditions of atmosphere with the oldest machine then in use in civil aviation. His aeroplane, .which was built in 1918, was the D.H.9c. : Biddeley " Puma/' 240-h,p, engine, in jwhich he flew to Dublin for the Times - and in which he had undertaken many daring flights. The 12.000 miles tour was ■ Accomplished in 130 hours living time, with the same machine, the same engine, and no overhaul. The route followed during the tour was Londod, Paris, Marseilles, I'iia* Rome, Brindisi, Athens, Crete, Sollam, the' Siwah Oasis, Cairo, Assuan, Wadvhali'a, Luxor, over the Valley of jibe Kings, Cairo, Jerusalem, Damascus, Aleppo, Beyrout, Cairo, Alexandria, Solium, Tripoli, Siax, Constantine, Oran, Fez, Casa BJanca, Rabat, Seville, Clranada, Madrid, Bordeaux, Lympne, ' Jind London. ' »
