ATHLETICS.
THE AUCKLAND CENTRE
PRESENTATION OF MEDALS*
The presentation of championship medals to the winners was made by the Auckland Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association on Saturday evening. The president. Mr. Arthur Tilly, occupied the chair. The chairman said interest in athletics had been well' maintained during the past season, by the competitors, despite the lack of suitable running and cycling tracks. Several fine carnivals had been held, but public support had not been worthy of the occasions. He favoured bringing crack overseas performers to the Dominion, as their appearance here not only stimulated public interest, but tended to raise the standard of our own competitors. Next season would be _a busy one for the Auckland Centre, for in addition to the provincial amateur championships, it was practically certain that the New Zealand championships would be decided here. Mr. A. L. Bayliss suggested that the centre should communicate with the N.Z.A.A.A. with a view to Mr. F. J. Ohlson being empowered to arrange, if possible, for a visit to the Dominion of a team of British Olympio athletes, including Abrahams, Liddell, and' Lowe. Ah effort should be also made to bring Nurmi to the Dominion. Mr. F. J. Ohlson stated that if he could. be of any service to the association while he was abroad ho would bo pleased, to assist in bringing about a visit of overseas champions. The president presented the medals won at the provincial amateur championship meeting A handsome silver table centre wan presented to the honorary treasurer. Mr. Robert Phillips. . ; Several toasts were honoured during the course of a very enjoyable evening.
