FOREIGNERS IN AUSTRALIA.
LESS THAN ONE PER CENT. [from our own correspondent.] , SYDNEY. July 18. According to returns that have just been issued by the Commonwealth Statistician, the foreign element in Australia is alimost infinitesimal. The number of persons in Australia on April 4, 1921, who were stated to be the subjects of foreign nations was 45,764, or less than 1 per cent, of the population. If those classed as migratory, who were .mostly on board ships in Australian waters, are omitted, the foreign •element in the population of Australia would be about 74 in every 10,000 persons. On the basis of males only, the proportion of foreign people would be 183 in every 10,000. ~ The foreign proportion of the population differed very materially among tho various States. The following were the number of foreign people in every 10,000 of the population:—New South Wales, 75 j Victoria, 50; Queensland, 123; South Australia, 34; West Australia, 156; Tasmania, 18. In the Northern Territory the foreign clement represented 658, or 17.3 per cent. ,of the total population (excluding people on ships) of 3802. Of the 658 xoreign persons in the Northern Territory 465 were Chinese. Tho more important of the foreign peoples, as regards numbers, in Australia were as follow:—Chinese, 12,818; Italians, 4228; Germans, 3507; Americans (U.S.A.), 2959; Greeks, 2743; Russians, 2244; French, 1862; Japanese, 1309; Swedes, 1131; Dutch, 882; Norwegians, 746.
