DEFENCE NOTES.

BY RAMROD. A six-days' training course for officers and N.C.O.'s of mounted rifle units will commence on Friday at Narrow, Neck. Major H. C. Glendining will bo in command, assisted by Captain Johnson.

The parade of the 3rd Battery, N.Z.A. (Major C. N. Newman, D.5.0.), last Tuesday, was exceptionally meritorious. The N.C.O.'s have splendid control of their sub-sections, and, without excoption, are efficient and keen instructors. Although the Battery has been in existence only about 12 months, its progress has been remarkably rapid, and is a tribute not only to the commander, Major Newman, but' also to the men themselves. Tho Battery' 3 noxt parade will bo on August 5.

The College Rifles Club (4th Howitzer Battery), has decided to discontinue the inessroom in Tyrone Buildings. Members now gather at the Midland Tearooms in tb® same building. The lectures are held as usual in the clubrooms after luncheon.

The 28th Company (Ponsonby) senior cadets recently fired for the Imperial Challenge Shield competition. The scoring was excellent, a percentage of 89.5 being returned.

. The 28th Company (Ponsonby) senior cadets will parade to-morrow evening at the Drill Hall, instead of Ponsonby. The fall-in will be at 7.15 p.m.

The 20th Pack Battery (Lieut. A. A. Currey), 3-7 howitzers' monthly parade v.-ill take place on Friday. Members of tike Battery, wltio live on the town side of the harbour must catch the 7 o'clock boat to Devonport.

A 30-days' training course for members of the R.N.Z.A. will bo held at Trentham, commencing on August 8.

The Ist Battery (Major F. C. Soar) have entered two men in the boxing competitions that commence to-night. This is the first year the artillery units ljave been represented at the .tournament, and now that thegp. are some keen artillerymen on the Management Committee, greater activity among these units may be cxpected.
