BREEDING BEETLES.

Collins, of Palmerston North, who recently visited the Islands, that in Sapnoa the plantations are infested with a pest called the rhinoceros beetle, arid the native workers are called upon to bring in a certain number dairly in an endeavour to eliminate them. When the scheme had been in operation for a while the natives began to return their quota, with unfailing regularity. It was thought that much'good was being done, until one day it was discovered that the dusky tricksters had commenced to breed the beetles in order to be able to account for them, on demand. •
