OBITUARY.

SIR S. RUSSELL-WELLS, M.P

The death has occurred of Sir Sydney Russell-Wells, Conservative member of the House of Commons for London University.

The' late Sir S. Russell-Wells had represented the London University in the House of Commons since 1922. He represented the University on the General Medical was senior physician to the Seamen's Hospital, Greenwich, lecturer on the practice of medicine at 'the London School of Clinical Medicine, Shysician to the National for iseases of the heart, and hon, physician to the dioceses of Lebombo, Rangoon and Zululand. He was vice-chancellor of the University of London from 1919-1922. Sir Sydney was born at Kensington, London, in September, 1869. He had published verious contributions in scientific and medical journals. MR. R. APPLEGARm A. and N.Z., LONDON. July 14. The death is announced of Mr. Robert Applegarth, a pioneer trade unionist, at the age of 90. The late Mr. Applegarth had an interesting career as a trade unionist and agent for submarine and mining engineers. He was born in 1834 and was the son of a mariner. He had spent a good many years of his life in America. Mr. Applegarth acted as a war correspondent in the Franco-Prussian war in 1870, for the Sheffield Independent, the Scotsman and the New York World. MRS. HENRIETTA WARD. Australian r.nd N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 11.5 P.m.) LONDON. July 14. The well-known painter, Mrs. Henrietta Mary Ward, died to-day. The late Mrs. Henrietta Ward was a grand-daughter of Mr. James Ward, R.A., animal painter to the King. She was a niece of Mr. John Jackson, R. A. portrait painter. She married Mr. E. M. Ward, R.A., in 1848, at the age of 16. Mrs. Ward exhibited at the Royal Academy, London, consecutively from 1849 to 1879, and constantly since then, as well as at other galleries. She painted chiefly historical works. During Queen Victoria's lifetime Mrs. Ward frequently worked for Her Majesty.
