ADVERTISING CONVENTION. SPEECHES AT THE OPENING. (Received 7.8S p.m.) A. and N.Z.—Reuter. LONDON. July 14. The first International Advertising Convention to be held in Europe wa3 opened by the Prince of Wales to-day in the Palace of Industry at the Empire Exhibition. The hall was decorated with flags of different countries. Mr. S. H. Thomas, Secretary for the Colonies, and the American Ambassador, Mr. P. Kellog, were present. • . The Prince was given an enthusiastic reception. Lord Burnham welcomed the delegates. His Eoyal Highness said that advertising aimed at providing throughout the world a freer exchange of commodities at a lower cost of distribution. > This would result in the elimination of the unemployment wave and a reduction in prices. Mr. Kellog said he believed the InterAllied Conference to be held in London on Wednesday would solve the greatest economic problem which had confronted Europe for generations. Mr. Thomas welcomed the delegates on behalf of the Government.
' Speaking at a banquet held in connection with the convention, Mr. Thomas' said they wero not going to measure the success of the Empire Exhibition by the balance-sheet, but by the opportunity it would have given to millions of their fellow-men and women to understand what the Empire meant. Even more would they measure it by the chance it would have given to millions of school children to obtain a better understanding of the Empire than they could ever obtain from text books.
Mr. Winston Churchill said that after all the Empire was only a model of what thev hoped the whole world would come to." Though it would not be under a'hy single flag they hoped that some 'day the whole world would become related as harmoniously, and quarrel as moderately as did the various States and polities grouped within the circle of the Empire.
