HIGHWAY ALLOCATIONS.
RIGHTS OF LOCAL BODIES.
CONSULTATION URGED.
At a meeting of members of the No. 1 Group District Council under the Main Highways Scheme Mr. R. Russell, of Hokianga, moved that the council considered that the time had arrived when the Main Highways Board should make a definite statement to the various councils throughout the Dominion as to what amount of money is to be available for each group for the year, 1924 to 1925, and that the council further suggested that the total amount available be allotted to each group,, which would make recommendations to the Main Highways Board concerning a detailed allocation to th«< various local bodies. The method of the main board making commitments throughout the country before first advising the district councils concerned must bring about confusion and ultimate hardship to some districts. A strong protest was therefore made against allocations being made unless the above conditions were observed.
It was decided by the council that the executive should visit Wellington in support of the motion.
