TO-DAY'S ILLUSTRATIONS. CURRENT EVENTS IN PICTURES. There are many np-to-date illustrations, excellently reproduced and of wide variety, in the pictorial section of the Attcbxaitd Weekly News, published to-day. As usual, current events, and misadventures in New Zealand and all parts of the world are well covered, making the publication one of great general interest.
A most important event in the progress of Auckland province, the acceptance of a tender for the construction of the great hydro-electrio works at Arapuni, is featured on the frontispiece. A bold picture, remarkable for clearness of detail, shows the central point of the scheme, which is thoroughly explained. An interesting comparison is furnished by a series of photographs on another page, which show Wellington's huge hydio-elec-tric works at Mangahaoj, now almost completed. A bright selection of snapshots Becured during the Wellington Racing Club's winter meeting at Trentham, illustrate the principal events and show well-known enthusiasts on the lawn. Another fine page is devoted to hunting in Canterbury, and the Christchurch Club's point-to-point races at Homebush. Other sporting items are:—The " All Blacks "in Sydney, interprovincial baseball at Christchurch, America's team of lady swimmers at the Olympic Games, jumpingcompetitions for hunters during Carnival Week in Wellington, the first game of bowls to be played in public at Suva, and a photograph of Nurmi, the athlete who is putting up such amazing performances at the Olympic Games in Paris. This week's centre double-page is devoted to the latest news by, photography from overseas, and features recent events and occasions of public interest in Britain. Pleasingly arranged, every picture is of decided interest, illustrating important items of an unusually brilliant season.
