MUNICIPAL ORGAN RECITAL.
Despite the incleTnent weather there was a. large attendance -at the Town Hall ;on Saturday evening at the weekly /organ recital given by the city organist, Mr. J. Maughan Barnett. ; An interesting and varied programme of classical and modern music was rendered, and was received with much 5 enthusiasm by •'/ the audience. Mr. :Maughan: ; "Barnett's numbers included Mendelssohn's "Spinning Song? and Beethoven's ; ever-popular "Minuet," both of which were' enthusiastically y encored. Another ; very popular; item was the Moderate ; Cantabile movement from Widor s Bth Symphony. Prelude and Fugue in G (Bach), "Concerto" (Handel), and;; Post-; lude (Wely) / were ' r sympathetically rendered, and received well-merited applause.; The organist withjthe:"Othello ! Suite* 1 by Coleridge-Taylor, which was per-: formed in a most masterly \manner ; and met with a remarkably warm reception. A bracket of .* songs were sune by the tinted Australian contralto, Miss Phyllis Hazell. in a manner which completely captivated her bearers. Her numbers were, "Softlv Awakes My Heart", (Saint Saens) and- "Spirit 3ong" (Campbell-Tipton) both of which were rendered/ in a remarkably fine ! manner that /earned well-deserved en-'; ©ores. J
