NOTES FROM CANTERBURY.

[BY TELEGRAPH.OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday.

; Onyx registered a 'high-class performance in winning the chief ©vent at 'the Ashburton Trotting Club's meeting to-day. She was one of the last into the straight, but ran through the field as if they wore commoners. The time, 4min 20 4-sßec, on a. truck that was a trifio dead, was exceptional. Onyx 'has raced very consistently this season, and well deserved her win. Prince Pointer was a hot favourite for tho Ashburton Trotting Club Handicap. He faded out 111 the last bit, but he is a firstclass four-year-old, who can be expected to do big things next season. Mun-o'-War paced two great races at Ashburton. He has performed with great consistency lately. Perlie Chimes should win the first time she goes right all the way. She finished •fourth at Ashburton, after getting off badly. All Bell was never dangerous in her run at Ashburton, while Blair Audubon failed to begin. B. Edwards is returning to Auckland in a few days, but will leave his two pacers here, and will be back to race them at Addington in August. Mr. R. M. Morten established a great record to-day by winning the Sapling Stakes at Ashburton for the third year in succession. Two years ago Ahuriri was successful. last year Taurekareka won, and now Kohara, a well-grown colt by Cathedral Chimes—Bright Alice, scored. There was a bit of luck about the latest win, as Mr. H. F. Nicholl's Gibraltar (by Nelson Bingen—Granella) seemed to 'have his measure when, he broke near the pest. B. Jarden has been in bad health. lately; and it is probable that he will leave shortly for a holiday trip to Australia. His intention' is. to go as far as Perth, and the time he will spend in travelling should do a lot to restore him to the best health. Box Seat has joined N. C. Price's active brigade at New Brighton. He looks well, and it is to bo hoped he will stand a preparation for coming spring events. Coil broke down badlv when racing last at Addington, and will require a good spell. Agathos was put into training a few months ago, and to the surprise of his trainer he stood up to his work, and showed a lot of ( speed, especially over short courses. He won a race at Easter, but afterwards he went _ sore again, and his last effort at -Addington was very bad. It is doubtful if he will race again. A.. (J. Wilson's two-year-old trotter by Nelson Bingen—Runaway continues to train on the right way. He has furnished a good deal during the .last few months. At present he is not being &?nt along at any record-breaking speed, his trainer being qui+e content with _ the speed he has already shown. He is easily the beet young trotter that has been seen on a local course.
