MORRINSVILLE NEWS.

EDUCATION NEEDS.

[by telegraph, —OWN CORRESPONDENT. J MORRINSVILLE, Saturday.

Mr. J. Cnughley, Director of Education, paid a brief visit to Morrinsville this week. He was met by the Mayor, Mr. G. Howie, Messrs. J. B. Thomas, Irvine and Greenwood, representatives of the local School Committee. The proposal to erect a manual training school at Morrinsville at a cost of £2127 was discussed, and the committee's endeavours to raise £500 for that purpose was explained. Mr. Caughley stated that 11' other such schools, which were of the same degree of urgency, had been asked for. He expressed approval of the efforts of the Morrinsville people, and said lie would report favourably upon the request. It was explained that the Education Board had been asked to reconsider its refusal to discontinue the sending of the children to Hamilton for manual instruction. In the meantime the chairman of the board had given consent to discontinue this practice, and since tho reopening after the.winter vacation the Morrinsville children had not attended the Hamilton Manual School. Mr. Caughley stated that the department had issued instructions to all education beards that where the travelling and instruction occupied more than half a day these classes were to be discontinued, as it was recognised that the benefits received did not compensate for the amount of time lost in the ordinary school work.
