OIL PERMITS CHARGES.
MONTANA INDICTMENT.

Senator W. E. Borah has presented to the Senate a report which completely exonerates Senator Wheeler in connection with the Montana charges. These alleged misuse of his office by Mr. Wheelei in regard to oil permits.
Senator Wheeler, a leading member of the Senate Committee which is inquiring ' into _ the activities of the Department 01 Justice, was indicted at Montana, on April 8, charged with accepting a retainer, after becoming a Senator, to mi fluency the granting of permits to work j oil lands. Two other men were indicted ; with him. It was stated that . Mr. j Wheeler's law firm accepted a fee of 10,000 dollars for defending the interests of one section of oil promoters who were attempting to' prevent others from obtaining valuable oil-drilling rights. Mr. Wheeler expressed surprise at the indictment, and asserted his inability to understand the cause. His friends declared that it was mainly inspired bv his enemies, who were incensed over the Daiigherty investigation. They said that the coup was designed to distract public attention from the Senate Committee's revelations.
