TESTS AT AUCKLAND.
CONDITIONS NOT SUITABLE.

Auckland is not to have the> Yale telescope, a cablegram Jiving been received from the Yale Univejaity authorities to the effect that the conditions in this city are not quite suitable for the special requirements of the university.
Reporting on this matter to the City Council last evening, the Mayor, Mr. J. H. Gunson, said that last year a tentative agreement was entered into with the Yale University authorities for the establishment of a largo telescope at Auckland. Tests were taken and the records sent to Yale. Under date of May 14 a cablegram was received as follows: — Board decides Auckland not quite suitable f<y our special requirements. Letter follows."
Mr. Gunson added that previous ad--vices indicated that if Auckland wo* deemed to be unsuitable tho alternative was South Africa and no doubt letter ■ advices would bring further information. The .Mayor's report was adopted. .
