SOLD HIS BROTHER'S GUN.
A VICTIM. OF DRINK. - ' A short list of cases was dealt with at the Police Court yesterday by Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M. Roy Harris, aged 29, was charged with the theft of a shotgun, valued at £5, from his s brother, Samuel Oak Harris, The latter, in evidence, stated that accused had been hopelessly addicted . to drink since bis return from the war, and was willing to serve a term at an' institution in an endeavour to recover himself. .'- . Detective Lambert said that accused borrowed the gun, intending to return it. He had been out of work for six months, being only in receipt of a war pension, and when an acquaintance offered to buy the weapon he parted with it. Accused expressed his willingness to serve a term at an institution, and sentence was accordingly deferred for a week pending I the completion of arrangements. AN EXTRADITED BANKRUPT. / A bankrupt, Augustus Roose, aged 26, who had been extradited from Australia, was charged with having left New Zea»* land with £20 and upwards which should have been divided among'his creditors. Chief-Detective Cummings stated that accused had fought the extradition proceedings in Australia. The total involved was about £1800. Accused was remanded for a week, bail being allowed in a surety of £300. PROBATION FOR FALSE PRETENCE.', Leslie James Byrne, aged 21, who waa charged on Wednesday with having ob-U tained a suit of clothes under false pre-' tences, appeared for sentence. it was stated that restitution to the amount of £11 lis had been made. Byrne, who had previously borne a good character, was '," placed on probation for one year.
