TAUBANGA AFFAIRS.
MEETING OF COUNCIL.
THE HARBOUR BRIDGE.
[BY . .TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] TAURANGA. Thursday. The Borough Council met last evening. It was reported that the unimproved valuation roll was to hand, but was bristling with errors, and it was decided that the department be written to immediately and asked to rectify these, also to send an officer to Tauranga to look into the matter.
In reply to a communication from the secretary of the Herries Memorial Committee, Te Aroha, it was decided to reply that the council favoured a memorial in the town of To Aroha, and was willing to increase its contribution from £25 to £50.
In reference to its inquiry as to the date' of the formal opening of the Tauranga Harbour Bridge, the Borough Council has received a letter from the Hon. J. G. Coates, in which he says he has made inquiry into the matter, and considered that it is hardly desirable to open the bridge until the department is in a position to commence passenger traffic to the station. He would prefer not to fix a date at present. The council considered a number of offers of land for recreation purposes, and decided to affirm the purchase of Mrs. C. T. Hardy's buildings and land in Sixth Avenue, fronting the eastern harbour. The tender of Mr. P. Macpherson for the erection of the railway station building at Tauranga has been aocepted by the Public Works Department.
