HAMILTON NOTES.

BOROUGH COUNCIL DOINGS. IBX XELEQQAPJJt.OWN CORRESPONDENT.! HAMILTON. Thursday. When the Borough Council handed over Arawa Street to the Education Department, a quid pro quo was offered in a piece of land between the chief post office and the money order office. This land has not yet been handed over to the borough, and at a meeting of the council last evening Mr. C. J. W. Barton inquired what the position was. It was decided to write to the Minister for Education requesting him to honour the department's obligation in the matter. The value of buildings for which permits were issued in the borough of Hamilton during April totalled £10,693. The Borough Council has decided to allocate £1000 to the Beautifying Society. When the Water Committee of the council brought down a recommendation that the. dead end mains be connected at a cost not exceeding £1050, Mr. A. E. Webb objected, on the ground that it would primarily benefit the insurance companies, who, he considered, had not given Hamilton a fair deal. Hamilton had the most modern fire-fighting equipment it was possible to get, yet the fire premiums in Hamilton were probably the highest in New Zealand. It was explained that it was necessary to connect up the dead ends to improve the reticulation, and the recommendation was adopted.
