CHINESE WITH PISTOL.
AN UNREGISTERED WEAPON. ONE MONTH'S IMPRISONMENT. A spruce-looking young Chinese, William Chan, aged 23 (Mr. Holmden), appeared at the Police Court yesterday before Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., on four charges in respect of the unlawful possession of an automatic pistol and ammunition. Chief-Detective Cummings stated that accused visited Australia last year and returned with the weapon. He had no permit, the firearm was not registered and, in addition, Chan was classified as a person to whom a permit could not be issued. Accused was accustomed to exhibit the pistol to his friends in a spirit of bravado. When he heard the police were suspicious he threw the automatic over the Hobson Street Wharf. He was defiant when arrested and stated that lie carried the pistol when he patronised gambling dens, with the intention of using it to good effect in the event of a police raid. Chan had six previous convictions for criminal offences. A sentence of one month's imprisonment was imposed. j
