THEFTS FROM WINE STORE.
BREAKING AND ENTERING. TWO MEN PLEAD GUILTY. The recent thefts of wine from the premises of the Kaipara Wine Company, in Stanley Street, had their sequel in the Police Court yesterday, when Leslie Martin, aged 26, and Frederick George Lester, aged 19, were charged before Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., with breaking and entering with intent to commit a crime. Plain-clothes Constable Sullivan deposed that, with Acting-Detective Barling, he concealed himself in the Kaipara Wine Company's store on the evening of April 19. About ten o'clock Lester entered the building through a window and was secured after a struggle. Acting-Detective Barling stated that immediately after the arrest of Lester he searched the premises. Ho found Martin waiting outside. Accused refused to submit to arrest and endeavoured to make the detective think he was armed. When he wag tackled he struggled violently, but did not produce a weapon. As the two prisoners were being escorted from the wine store, Martin gave a shrill whistle, which was apparently a signal to accomplices. In: written 'statements accused said they had gone to the building with the intention of taking two bottles of wine. They had been joy-riding in a motor-car with another man and three young women and had left these people waiting in the car while they went in search of the wine. Accused were committed to the Supremo Court for sentence, bail being fixed at £150.
