PAVING OF NORTH ROAD.

;—* - , TASK FOR CITY COUNCIL, * AID FOR LOCAL BODIES. FINANCING THEIR QUOTA. PROPOSAL BY THE MAYOR:'; An important recommendation whereby the Auckland City Council would undertake, on behalf of the local bodies concerned, the work of paving the Great -* North Road from the Mount Albert boundary l 0 Henderson was submitted to the City Council by the Mayor, Mr. J. Gunson, last evening. Under this proposal the City Council also finds the money, lending to the local authorities their share for a period of 14 years at 6 per cent. Provisionally, said the Mayor, the position was that, subject to the adoption of the proposals by the Highways Board, miles of road be laid in concrete 18 feet wide. An alternative route through Avondale now under . consideration would give a road length of 7} miles. The total estimated cost, subject to revision on the completion of survey and plans, was £50,000 and £62,C00 respectively. The allocation of cost was set down at: Highways Board 50 per cent. local authorities, 32$ per cent; and Auckland City Council, 17; per cent. This would mean that the local; authorities, including the council would contribute, according to the route selected, £25,000 or £31,000, the council's share being £8750 or £10,850. In the event of the City Council. carrying ■ out the work and lending the r.ec«s3ary money legislative authority would be required for the latter proposal. The council approved the suggestions.
