CHOKING OF GAS PIPES.
OIL WASHING AT WORKS. Addressing the annual meeting of the Sheffield Gas Company, the chairman, Colonel H. K. Stephenson, referred to the long-standing problem caused by naphthalene. " Year after year, under certain atmospheric conditions, our gas mains, and service pipes have become choked with naphthalene in a crystallised form, sometimes in one part of the city, sometimes in another," he said. "Although •we have adopted various expedients by way of remedy and, indeed, have done mucn to reduce the evil, our efforts have not been so completely successful as we desired. "We hope, however, before the next winter arrives, this trouble will have been eradicated. To accomplish this we are installing oil washing plant at each of t>ur works, in the confident expectation of good results."
