THE WEST END CLUB. KOHNT SHIELD TRIAL FOURS. The West End Bowing Club's annual trial fours for the Kohn Shield were rowed on Saturday afternoon. This is one of the club's most coveted _ trophies and usually attracts many entries, but upou this occasion, owing to the past season having been exceptionally Busy, the entry of four crows was satisfactory. The rowing was of a good standard, and the races keenly contested. Alter tho Kohn Shield races a set of "upside down" trials were rowed, and clearly demonstrated that some of the young oarsmen aro quito capable of taking the more responsible seat 3. Tho water conditions were good on the course from the Reclamation to tho Boathouse. Tho starting was by mutual consent. and Mr. W. Bright, Senr., was judge. The crews in tho first heat were:—J. Skinner, C. Wright, R. Lyons. H. Little; L. Skinner, A. C. Nordcn, L. Francis, F. Conway. The crows struck the water together and raced to the half-way mark on even terms. • J. Skinner's crow, stroked by C. Wright, then forged ahead. At tho wharf both crows spurted and a hard finish resulted in J. Skinner's favour by . a bare length. The second heat crews were:—J. Hay lock, T. O'Brien, M. Spencer, J. Stretton: W. Bright. A. Newdick. C. Parvin, G. Conway. There was little between the crews over the first quarter. Then Bright's crew took the lead, and although Haylock mad© a big effort he was beaten by a. good length. The crews of J. Skinner and W. Bright met for the final. From a fine start the crews moved away smartly and raced on even terms to th« quarter distance. Skinner then took a slight lead and at the wharf had over a length's advantage. Bright's crew then responded to ft spurt and coming fast, made on exciting finish, but _ suffered defeat by half a length. The winnine crew was:—C. Wright (str.), J. Skinnor (3), R. Lyons (2), H. Little (1). Conway (cox). "UPSIDE DOWN" TRIALS. In the first heat of the " upside down " trials, the crews were:R. Lyons. Haylock, M.Spencer, C. Parvin: C. Stretton, Phroso, W. Bright, F. Conway; F. Newdick, C. Wright, L. Skinnor. J. Skinner. Newdick's four took the lead from the start and won comfortably by a length and a-half from Lyons, with Stretton a length away. The crews in the final were stroked by F. Newdick and G. Conway. The crews rared j on even terms to off the Red Houre, where Newdick assumed tho lead and his crow, rowing well together, won easily by a length and a-half. The winners were:—F. Newdick. C. Wright. L. Skinner. J. Skinner.
