DEFENCE OF AUSTRALIA

BASE FOR CAPITAL SHIPS. VICE-ADMIRAL OPPOSED. A. ana N.Z. SYDNEY. April 7. Vice-Admiral Sir Frederick Field, commander of the British Special Service Squadron, interviewed at Jervis Bay, said he favoured Australia constructing her own warships and building up her navy, but that he deprecated any attempt on her part to construct a big base for capital ships. There was plenty of other work which Australia could do first, he said, in building her own warships and improving her docks, wharves and harbours, so that they could be used immediately in case of need. When these things were accomplished Australia could think about a capital ship base.
