CENTRAL AUSTRALIA.
EXPLORER TO VISIT. BELIEF IN ITS FERTILITY. A. and N.Z. NEW YORK. April 7. The Arctic explorer Stefansson, who sails by the Sonoma on May 6 for Australia, stated in an interview that he will make a special study of Central Australia. He intends to undertake a journey into the interior with Captain George Wilkins, of Sydney, a former Pp'ar associate, for the purpose of obtaining data for a series of lectures in Canada upon his return in October. He expressed the belief that Australia's so-called desert was nothing of the sort. It probably possessed unimagined potential fertility. He said: I believe the reputed aridity of any land is in inverse proportion to our knowledge of it. Explorers suffer from a human tendency to ,; heroise" themselves by exaggerating the dangers of new lands and their inaccessibility. The'' world has been steadily trenching upon the fertile areas until now we are faced with the demand for new territory in which to expand, and this can be met only by reclaiming so-called deserts.
