NEW HEADMASTER CHOSEN.

WHANGAREI HIGH SCHOOL MR. A*. K. CHARTERS iAPPOINTED. fjBX jnCUKWAPH. — COKRSSrOSDBNT.} WHA2TGABEL Tuesday. Mr. X B. Charters, MJL, O.M.a, D.5.0., at present inspector of schools in the Auckland district, has been appointed principal of the Whangarei High School in succession to Mr. R. Lupton, who is retiring. Mr. Charters, after being educated at Christ's College, Christchnrch, entered the teaching profession. After being in Wellington for six years he became first assistant si the Masteeton District High SchooL sad 12 years ago he was appointed an inspector. In the South' African War Mr. Charters gained the Queen's Medal, with three clasps, and he served in the Great War from 1914 till 1919 He became Lieutenant-Colonel, and commanded the first battalion, Otago Regiment, was awarded the C.M.G. and D.5.0., and was mentioned four Cries in the despatches of Sir lan Hamilton and Earl Haig. In Egypt he organised the base depot at Alexandria, and was in control of the New Zealand Administration. He went through some of the heaviest operations in France, and was wounded three times, although not seriously. He also had a fine atheltic record. After his return, Mrj Charters left the education service for 12 months, and took tap farming in the Eiripaka district. Deciding to return Jo his former occupation, he received an appointment as inspector of schools.
