ROYAL SHOW SOCIETY.
COUNCIL OF AGRICULTURE.
PROPOSED AMALGAMATION.
[BT TELEGRAPH.— CORRESPONDENT.] ;. * ■" CHRISTCHTJBCH. Thursday, The Royal Agricultural and Pastoral Society evidently does not intend to allow its activities to end with the holding of an annu;J show. The president of the society, Itlr. W. Perry, stated to-day that it is very likely that the society will, in the near future, take the place of the Council of Agriculture in working for the general welfare of the farming community. It was pioposed, Mr. Perry said, to merge the council into the society. \The society will be a very much stronger body than the council, which always has been handicapped by the lack of funds, and in certain quarters dissatisfaction has been expressed frith its work.
The society, said Mr. Perry, hoped to have sufiicient funds*to deal efficiently with all phases of agriculture as well as holding sjwual shows. The annual meeting of the Council of Agriculture and the annual conference of A. and P. Associations would be held in July, and the executive committee of the council, which is elected by the A. and P. Association, would, in conjunction with the Royal Society, prepare a basis for the merger to be placed before the A. and P. Conference.
Speaking of the welfare of the Royal Society generally, Mr. Perry said that the position was very satisfactory. The society was receiving good support from breeders and the A. and P. Associations in the wi»y of cups and money, and generally keen interest was being shown in the movement. Most of the associations in the Dominion had affiliated or had promised to affiliate, and besides this the members of the society now totalled between 7(0 and 800. Mr. Perry's principal object in coming to Christchurch is to help with the membership campaign, and the canvass is yielding very satisfactory results.
