THE WAIRAU BRIDGE SCHEME
RATEPAYERS TO ' DECIDE.
The Waitemata County Council met yesterday, those present being the chairmanr Captain P. Theet, and Messrs, T. Burns, G. O'Halloran, A. M. Laing/ H. Day, A. Diprose, R. Glasgow; J. Mackie, F. Grigg. R. Poynton,,and W. Oliphant. '_ The question of the construction of the. Wairau Bridge was briefly considered. It was reported that at a conference between the Hon. G. J. Anderson and representa-; tives of the County Council and the Takapuna Borough Council, the representatives of the two local bodies agreed to , recommend to their respective bodies the adoption of the scheme via Omaha Road, in lieu of the route via Craig Road, subject to the Takapuna Borough carrying Omana Road through to the main road within three years. It was agreed, subject to confirmation by the two bodies, that the basis of contribution should he Takapuna Borough, 25 per cent.; Waitemata County, 75; per cent... The council .expressed itself in favour of the scheme, . hut action. was deferred pending the de- 7 ; cision of the ratepayers on the matter. .v The engineer reported that metalling jobs in Kumeu and Waitakere ridings were very much behind, and there would bo keen disappointment if the. works in hand were not completed before the winter. The same thing happened each year and would continue so long as the council was dependent on contract carting. The only remedy was to acquire trucks to do the work. At a later stage of the meeting, Mr. F. Grigg was authorised to buy a metal truck for the Waitakere riding. Tenders were accepted as follows: Dormer's culvert.. Kaukapakapa. \7. Gallagher, .£152: Mahetahi shell supplies. ('. MeLeod, £100: South Lynn road formation, £23 15s, W. K. McQuoid. The need for the formation of a road from Duck Creek to the main Silverdaie Road was brought before the council by Mr. H. Vipond. who i stated that the people in this district had been paving rates for many years, hut had derived no benefit, as they had no direct road connection with the Silverdale Road. They now asked for authority to form a special 'rating area in order to raise £500 for the formation of a road. The Pukeatua - riding was raising a loan of £5000 for road works, but it was desired that £500 should be added to this sum for the [ special purpose outlined.
