DOMINION MARKSMEN.

CHANGE IN POSITIONS.

SIMMONDS NOW LEADING.

A DAY OF BULLS-EYES.

JAMES WINS CARBINE CUP.

[.PRESS

TRENTHAM. Thursday.

The weather this morning was warm amd so was the shooting at the opening event of the day in the National Rifle Association's meeting, the Wellington match, 500 and 600 yards. One board showed what is a record for New Zealand, if not the world. It read: Mc« Pherson (Tapanui), 50; Tobin (Whangarei), 50; Boon (Karori), 50; West (Okawa), 50; and 'Higgs (New Plymouth), 41. McPherson kicked off with four for a sighter, which, of course, was rejected. Then he and the three following men put on 42 consecutive " bulls," but Higgs could not keep it up. Among other scores were possibles by Clark, ,C. and F. Whiteman, Palmer, Barkle, Lawson, .H. Harris, and Head, while 49's were plentiful. ....

The latter part of the forenoon was devoted to the firing of the first stage of the Dominion Match, 15 shots at 600 yds. The wind was still tricky at times, althugh some men struck quiet patches and lost no time in getting shots off. One of these was W. J." Anderson (Kaituna), who found the inner with a sighter but never afterwards left the black disc. It was a fine performance, beyond anything previously recorded at Trentham. Several other fine cards were handed in, the best being those of G. Hood (Opaki) and J. Kyle (Linton), 71 each; H. R. Hunt (Suburbs) and C. J.' Nix (Featherston), 70 each; W. Dellern (Upper Hutt), 69. Scores of 68 and 67 were common, and then they tailed off. This match does not count for the belt.

The afternoon was devoted to the Otago Match, of 10 shots at 800 and 900 yds. The breeze freshened occasionally, but generally was of a character that puzzled the riflemen, especially at 900 yds. James, who had held his leading position with a solid 94 in the Wellington Match in the morning and got 41 at 800 yds in the Otago Match, was only able to put on ,'SO at 900 yds, making his belt aggregate 407. Meantime Simmonds had got 88 in the Wellington Match and 91 in the Otago event, putting him well in the lead for the belt with an aggregate of 413. The Leading Aggregates.
