HANDS ACROSS THE SEA.
ENGLISH-SPEAKING PEOPLES.
DR. MAYOS SENTIMENTS.
[BT TELEGRAPH.OWN • WELLINGTON. Thursday.
There was a large attendance at the Wellington Lyceum Clnb last evening, when the Wellington' branch of the Eng-lish-speaking Union entertained the party of American medical men who attended the Medical Conference recently held in Auckland,
Dr. Mayo, who was enthusiastically received, began his remarks with a graceful allusion to the entwining of the British and American flags at the head of the stage in the room. He said that he agreed with those who were of opinion that the peace of the world would be largely determined by a solid foundation of friendship between the English-speak-ing peoples of England and America, in which he included Canada. He alluded to the cordial relations which existed between America and Canada, and the fact that there was only an "imaginary "' between the two countries.
America realised, said Dr. Mayo, that it had, in its aim to relieve the distressed people of the earth, been rather quixotic in having such a wide, opendoor since the war. It had been found necessary to make restrictions, which, if they had been thought of before, would have lessened the. difficulties very conr siderably. Referring to the war, he said : "If we had gone into the; »*" at •tihe atari, we would have gone in 75 per cent, strong. It took us two years, but when we did go in, it was with 95 per cent, of oar strength. The United States is with you in this English-speak-ing union. America has more public .conscience than any other people in the world, because we are. governed from the bottom. It is pleasing to find, in this far-flung Dominion of the British Empire, the same ideals and aspirations as we have in our own hearts." ; (Applause).
