NO TELEPHONE EXCHANGE.
RUAKAKA'S APPLICATION.
EXPENDITURE NOT JUSTIFIED.
[BT TELEGEAPH.—PKBSS
WHAUGABEI. Thursday.
A reply has been received by the Mayor of Whangarei, Mr. D. A. McLean, to a request submitted by a deputation of residents of Ruakaka to the Hon. J. G. Coates- when he visited Whangarei in January, that a telephone exchange be established at Ruakaka, a district a .few miles north of Waipu. The Minister has replied that the matter has been' fully considered, but that the request cannot be granted at the present time. It was pointed out that Ruakaka was only six miles from Waipu, at which there is telephone exchange attendance, and that if the Ruakaka settlers ■; joined up with the 'exchange at Waipu they would get a much better service than would be possible from connection with an exchange at Ruakaka. The Ruakaka district was not likely to be closely settled for some time. A number of the applicants were employed in gumdigging, and could not be regarded as permanent settlers. -In the circumstances, the department would not be warranted in incurring the expenditure • that would be involved in establishing a telephone exchange at Ruakaka.
