TOTAL OP £167,000.
.OWN COHRFSFONDKOT HAMILTON. Thursday.
At a meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council last evening, loan proposals,, totalling over £200,000, were placed Before the council, and of this amount the sum of £167;000 was authorised for submission to the ratepayers, while two proposals, representing £14,900, were deferred for further consideration.
The necessity of prosecuting a vigorous policy of " road formation was again emphasised, when a recommendation of the Legal and Finance Committee to borrow £70,000 for this purpose was approved. No less than £50,000 of this sum would be devoted toward ensuring an adequate metal supply. ' lie Mayor, Mr. J. E. Fow, spoke of the necessity, of a forward movement. He said that •he believed there was a great future for the-town,, and it was the council's doty to ensure a good metal supply, v Given the - whole-hearted cooperation of the council, he was willing to go to the ratepayers. Without support- he would not: advocate the raising of loans. , • .--V ',•'•. . Mr G. J.. Barton drew - attention to the fact that there was still a sum of £87,000 loan money authorised; Mr. W. G. Rollett said that he thought that the expenditure of all loan, moneys should be,. curtailed as much as possible at the present time., 'v The recommendation of the Works Committee that a loan of £16,800 be raised to instal sewerage in Claudelands B area was also approved. A member of the council remarked that the expenditure of such a sum-to. serve a fairly limited number of dwellings seemed unwise at present, but Mr. Barton,, in reply, .said that the expenditure was justified from the point of view of public health. f Included in tike proposals carried is a sum of £50,000 for the buildmg of a bridge at Whitiora and a further £25,000 . for new : municipal offices.
