[THE FISHING INDUSTRY.
SANFORD'S NEW WORKS,
MODERN BUILDINGS PLANNED,
ESTIMATED COST, £60,000,
The new works to be erected on a site at Freeman's Bay for Sanford, Ltd., ■will mark a distinct advance in the Auckland fishing industry.
It is stated that the new works will represent the highest standard of equipment and efficiency in the fish-marketing industry in the Southern Hemisphere. facilities are to be provided for the rapid and economical handling of fish and the disposal of various by-products.
The new buildings will cover a ground ®re» of 35,000 square feet, adjacent to the new wharf for trawlers at Freeman's Bay. Provision is to be made for spacious cleaning sheds, fifteen modern smoke-houses on tho cradle system, and frlso brino tanks.
Besides steam crayfish cookers and fish digester works there will be a complete £ce-making plant capable of turning out 100 tons of ice a week.Freezing chambers and coolers on tho most modern lines will bo installed, also a rabbit-skinning plant and provision for canning on an extensive scale. Small fish-dealers will also be well Catered for. They will be provided with separate accommodation $ for cleaning, freezing, chilling and the smoking of fish. Speaking of the expansion of the business generally and the proposed new buildings in particular, Mr. Gilbert Sanlord, managing director, stated that the land acquired for building the new works would allow ample room for further extensions for many years to come. The machinery* alone would cost £14,000 and the total cost of the new buildings would approximate £60,000. Mr. Sanford added that he had visited all the notable ■■ fish-curing establishments of the world and • had absorbed the best ideas of the best of them. When finished the new' works, though not the largest, would certainly be most complete and efficient and would compare very favourably with similar establishment's in any part of the world.
