WAIRAU BRIDGE.

DIFFICULTIES REMOVED.

OMANA ROAD SITE FIXED.

DIVISION • OF THE COST. -

The main difficulties attending the question of the construction of the bridge over the Wairau' creek, on the boundary between the Takapuna ■ Borough ■ arid Wai temata County, and the division of the cost between the two local bodies were cleared' away by the conference which took place some days ago between the Minister for Marine, the Hon. G. J. Anderson, the' district engineer, Mr. A. J. Baker, , and representatives of the borough and county councils. On that occasion it was intimated by the Minister that whatever site was chosen,' the bridge must leave the ' estuary of the Wairau at least in as navigable a state as it is at present. • , . , The representatives of.. the two local bodies agreed to recommend to- 'their respective bodies the adoption ~ of the scheme via Omana .Road, in lieu of the route via Craig Road,, subject to the Takapuna Borough carrying Omana Road through to the main road within three years. The v Takapuna representatives agreed to recommend this course _to their council, and also the straightening of the route at the. approach from Omana .Road., It was agreed, subject to confirmation by the two bodies, that the basis of contribution should be: Takapuna Borough, 25 per • cent.; . Waitemata County, 75 per cent. • This arrangement was confirmed, as' far as the Takapuna Council was concerned, at last evening's meeting, when gratification was expressed at the satisfactory . nature of the settlement. Instructions were given that steps be taken under the Public Works Act for the taking of the necessary land for the extension of Omana Road to Kitchener Road. - The occasion for , the sitting of the departmental- commission which was appointed • for • the adjustment of the points of difference is now removed.
