CHINAMAN AND HIS MONEY.
THEFT CHARGE DISMISSED. [by telegraph.— CORRESPONDENT.] HAMILTON. Tuesday. A charge of stealing the sum of £31, the property of a Chinese laundryman named iong Wing, was preferred against a young woman named Kitty Stewart, in the Hamilton Magistrate's Court to-day. Evidence was given by Fong Wing that accused visited his premises at Frunkton and passed the bedroom in which the money was stored in a large box. After accused had left he found that the box had been Opened with a meat axe, and that the money had gone. Counsel for accused contended that there was nothing to show' that she waff responsible for the theft. The fact that she. was on the premises that day might seem suspicious, but direct proof on which any jury could convict was entirely lacking. The magistrate, Mr. H. A. Young, agreed with counsel that no prima facie case had been made out. The information was dismissed!.
