REPUBLICAN DIFFERENCES By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. '••>> (Roceived 5.5 p.m.) . A. and N.Z. WASHINGTON, Feb. 23. New disclosures in connection -with the oil scandal revealed departmental endeavours to shield the oil interest and accused officials by delaying or even refusing assistance to investigators. Mr. Walsh, a member of • the Senate, complained that neither the Federal Secret Service nor the War, Treasury and Navy Departments thus far had lifted a finger to aid the committee. He added: "I have been both detective and prosecutor, but the time has come when I must have help." Mr. Walsh said it was futile to expect assistance from departments whose heads had either resigned or were under Senatorial fire. Meanwhile, Mr. H. M. Daugherty's defiant refusal to surrender the portfolio of Justice, while strongly opposed by Messrs. Lodge, Pepper and Borah, nevertheless has gained the support of Mr. Adams, chairman of Che Republican Party's National Committee, who has issued a statement demanding that the leaders cease their defensive and assume aggressive warfare against the Democrats. This attitude has served to strengthen sensational reports that Mr. Daugherty had threatened to tell many startling stories if the President, Mr. Calvin Coolidge, complied with the desires of members of the Senate and sacrificed him for the sake of the party, the present perplexity of which is regarded as the first indication of a serious rift within hitherto solid ranks.
