DEFENCE NOTES.

BT BAMBOD. The Ist Battery N.Z.A. that returned from Ngaruawahia last week made fine progress with their work. The Blomfield Cup for subsection competition was won by C sub-section, commanded by Sergeant Graham. The battery speak in high terms of the kind treatment received at the residents' hands.' The northern command , rifle and machine-gun meeting will take place at Penrose on Friday and Saturday next. The entries are good, and given : fine weather the meeting should be a _ great success. .... The Field Engineers, Northern Depot, comprising 160 officers and other ranks, in command of Major A. T. • Dow, completed their annual week's training at Narrow Neck camp on Saturday. An intensive syllabus of training, was carried out and much work of a practical nature undertaken.. The location of the camp was well suited for certain j branches .. of military engineering and the construction of barrel piers off Narrow Neck beach and the erection of trestle bridges from the cliffs adjacent to the camp were phases of the work in which , the trainees displayed considerable interest. On Thursday evening the officers entertained at dinner several of the officers who were associated with the regiment when; it was known over 25 years ago as the Auckland Engineer Volunteers and more recently as the No. 3 Company Field Engineers. Lieutenant Meikle acted as camp adjutant and Staff Sergeant-Major Stokes, of the permanent force, as infantry instructor. Colonel A. R. Potter. ' O.C. Northern Command, who returned to Auckland on Fridav from a visit of inspection to. the Whangarei High School barracks, states that the boys were .so . keen that they requested. the headmaster to allow, them to stay under canvas for a further week. The Thames High School will hold its annual barracks at the Parawai racecourse from March 10 to March 15.
