BIRKENHEAD STREETS.
SCHEME FOR IMPROVEMENT. LOAN OF £17,000 PROPOSED. Loan proposals for the improvement of the main streets and the footpaths, in numerous streets have been approved by the Birkenhead Borough Council, which has decided to submit the issues to a poll of the ratepayers on March 12. The amount required is £17,000, of which £11,910 is for streets, , £4140 for footpaths and £850 to defray the first year's interest charges. The security for the loan will be a special rate : of : 5-16tlis of a penny in the £ on, the unimproved value of the land within the borough. The council intends to adjust the rates during the - ensuing year I*o that the total struck will not exceed the amount collected during the present financial year. ' .. The proposals include the construction in union asphalt of the main road from the Birkenhead Wharf to Highbury, to the northern boundary at the corner of Pupuke and Glenfield roads, and also westward from Highbury to Waipa street. Improvements are to be carried out with scoria and shell in Rugby, Rawsne, Rangatira and Kiwi Roads. The footpaths scheduled, extending from the wharf to Birkdale, are to be treated with union asphalt. ■■ • The proposals will, be; explained to. the ratepayers at various meeting fcD be convened by the council. -;■ r* «
