NO FOREIGN OPERA.
AUSTRIAN VISIT BANNED.
SUCCESSFUL BRITISH PROTEST.
Australian and N.Z. CaMe Association. (Reed. 8.5 p.m.) LONDON. Feb. 9. The Central News Agency saya it is announced from Vienna that the State Opera's visit to London has been cancelled owing to the opposition of British musicians.
There has been considerable opposition in London to the proposed visit. The musicians' unions claimed that there was no need to introduce a foreign orchestra when British musicians were unemployed. Composers, musicians, actors and authors also issued a manifesto against the project, pointing out that the visit would be detrimental to the British opera, and asking what visitors from the Dominions would think when, on arriving for the Empire Exhibition, they found foreign opera in London. The Vienna State Opera proposed sending a company of over 200, under the conductorship of Richard Strauss and Franz Schalk, for a season at Covent Garden in May and June. ■ ■ •
