PHARAOH'S SARCOPHAGUS.
GUARDIAN GODDESSES. MALEVOLENT GREEN EYES. 1 ■ " "" 4 A. and N.Z. LONDON, Feb. 8. Lifting the pink granite lid of Tutankhamen's sarcophagus, which is firmly socketted in and cemented, is causing Mr. Howard Carter much trouble, especially as the lid is slightly cracked right across. Mr. Carter is now in Cairo purchasing fresh gear to carry out the delicate operations. Tho special Luxor correspondent of th* Morning Post says: "My vivides't impression of the sarcophagus is a goddess who stands at the south-east corner, regarding all -who dare approach with malevolent jade-green eyes. She stands with her arms and wings outstretched, clinging to tho sarcophagus. Her face is seductive, its delicate finely-chiselled features reminiscent of some of the most beautiful Egyptian women of to-day. The figure is indicated with masterly economy of line. The goddess wears a beautiful pectoral of $urquoiise and ultramarine with touches of gold. Armlets and anklets repeat the same decorative scheme. A serpent -writhes upon her head. Her sister goddesses are in similar attitudes in other corners, and differ only in their head ornaments.
