WATKATO RIVER TRAFFIC.
PROPOSED IMPROVEMENTS. HOW TO GET RURAL SUPPORT [BT XBtTCBAPH.— M COKBSSrOEDBNT.) HAMILTON. Friday. Mr. A Farcer, in an address at the Hamilton Rotary Club on Wednesday,; referred to a proposal for the establishment of a board to control the Waikato Biver traffic. The funds for improving the, river must of necessity, he said, come ; fromV; the pockets ;; of .« the farming community. : The agitation • came from the town folk, but would it not be more wise, he asked, for • the people interested to study the report of the Royal Commission and to collect all available, data J This information, together with some -well-thought-out scheme of handling the proposed traffic, could then be presented to .the rural community before soliciting their support. , The farmer, saddled at presents with road, hospital, electric p'ower," and drainage ; rates, ; would naturally look with distrust upon any proposal• to increase; ;these y rates. Therefore, - said Mr. Farrer, it ; would be : well to demonstrate to the man on the land that the improving of the waterway would result, instead-' of • an \ additional rate, in a saving to his pocket.
