PUREWA CEMETERY.
Probably the, worst kept cemetery in Auckland is thai at Purewa. I have been visiting this God's acre off and, on for over two years and nothing in the way of improvements or beautifying appears to have been even attempted during that period. Yesterday, the place presented a scene almost of desolation. Away from the main drives the neglect iB most pronounced. Paths, that were once tarred and sanded, show huge cracks and crevices from which weeds ' grow profusely. Grave plots are almost hidden from view by a rank overgrowth of weeds. Many headstones have fallen and been allowed to remain. One does not expect the trustees to keep grave plots in order, but it is surely reasonable to ex-, pect that the drives and pathways should be kept tidy. The lay-out of the cemetery lends itself admirably to a beautifying scheme. Even the main entrance suggests a sports or _ agricultural show ground rather than a - burial* place. A decent waiting shed in place of the present dilapidated structure, would improve matters somewhat at the entrance gates. The building sadly needs repair and has long since worn out its last coat of paint. Surely something could be done to remedy the present state of affairs and thus bring this God's acre into line' with Waikumete and Waikaraka. Visitor.
