ASSESSMENT OF DAMAGE.

The Minister for Finance, Mr. Inouyc, informed the Diet that- damage by the earthquake totalled between 7000 and 10,000 million yen (£7OO to £1000 millions). The Imperial University alone suffered a loss of 45 million yen.

CO-OPERATION FOR. PEACE. A. and N.Z. TOKIO, Dec. 14. The Prime Minister, Baron Yamamoto, Speaking in the Diet, referred to the circumstances in which the Cabinet was formed, and outlined the steps taken bailie Imperial Government to afford relief to earthquake sufferers. He spoke feelingly of the gratitude duo by the entire Japanese nation to nations abroad which hastened to its relief. He urged that Japanese should organise fa an endeavour to shore appreciation by exerting inc.eased efforts to promote ininternational friendship. On the subject, of restoration, be said the Government desired primarily to aid the people and to confine expenditure within the limits of their resources. Iu this connection Bills would be submitted to a special session. General matters "would be discussed at the opening of the regular session. ;
